We originally figured that Cape Lookout was named after some wartime bunker or lighthouse, but after running this course for ourselves it became clear that it’s named after the frequency with which runners blurt out, “Lookout for that rock!”, or “Lookout for those roots!”, or more to the point, “Lookout for those amazing views!”.

All that being said, every time I run these courses, I love it just a little more.

Choke-full of everything that is great about trail running in the PNW, these two courses have little surprises for you along the way - a short bouldering obstacle, small suspension bridge, a WWII commemoration plaque, etc.

AND, if the weather holds up according to forecast (knock on wood), we’re in for a perfect crisp and sunny Oregon coast day. Giddyup!

1/2 Marathon :

Though this run boasts no obvious markers of an extreme trail race, and wouldn’t be seen as such by many a seasoned trail runner, the trail is technical enough (especially in the mud of early March) that we decided to rate this course a black diamond - advanced. For someone who get’s there kicks battling the brutal 50Ks of the PNW, it’ll feel pretty chill. For those of us who’s stoke is to get some early morning trail surfing in on Wildwood, the black diamond is meant to put you on notice - pay attention or eat dirt.

The 1/2 marathon route runs from the Cape Lookout State Park’s day us area up the North Trail until it intersects with the Cape Trail. From there you will run the Cape Trail to the end and back. Just before you intersect with the North Trail again, you will take the South Trail down to the beach and back, before returning to the Start/Finish on the North Trail.

OK, that’s a mouthful.

Recap: North Trail to Cape Trail. Cape Trail out and back to South Trail. South Trail out and back (or rather down and up) to North Trail. North Trail to Start/Finish. Bam!

1/4 MARATHON:

The 1/4-Marathon is basically the same course as the 1/2-Marathon, sans the last section of the Cape Trail and free from the final quad-shredding trip down and back the South Trail.

So, North Trail to Cape Trail. Cape Trail to lookout and back to North Trail. North Trail to Start/Finish.
